5.2A. Preliminary rule

5.2A1. Scope.

Use this area to record statements relating to versions, editions or states of cartographic materials.1 Above the item level, use this area only when all of the items are of the same edition or state.

5.2A2. Punctuation

For instructions on the use of spaces before and after prescribed punctuation, see 1.0C.
Precede this area by a full stop, space, dash, space.
Precede the first statement of responsibility following an edition statement by a diagonal slash.
Precede each subsequent statement of responsibility by a semicolon.

5.2B. Edition statement

5.2B1.

Give an edition statement as instructed in 1.2B.

Give the source of the edition statement in a note (see 5.8B8) if it is different from the source of the title proper.

Optional addition. If the unit being described lacks an edition statement but is known to contain significant changes from other editions, supply a suitable brief statement in the language and script of the title proper and enclose it in square brackets.

Transcribe an edition statement appearing in accompanying material only if it also refers to the unit being described. In case of doubt, do not record such as an edition statement.

5.2C. Statements of responsibility relating to the edition

5.2C1.

Transcribe a statement of responsibility relating to one or more editions, but not to all editions, of the unit being described as instructed in 1.2C.
